Women as catalyst for social and economic development

"We for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society" is this year's theme for International Women's Month which truly reflects women's roles and responsibilities in today's society.

Women's tasks used to be limited to maternal roles and responsibilities. But times have changed and so have their roles and responsibilities in 21st Century society.

If women's roles then were just limited to taking care and raising children and doing household chores, in today's society, their responsibilities and obligations are beyond these maternal tasks.

Women have become catalysts for economic progress. They hold varying positions in both local and international companies. Data show that women's percentage in the workforce is almost equal to that of men.

In the Philippines, women have been part of the country's workforce. They have made significant contributions to the Philippine economy.

Millions of Filipino women are working in both big and medium companies and in micro-businesses like small bakeshops, restaurants and eateries, and salons.

Many Filipino women also work in public vehicles as conductors, and in malls as sales ladies.

Achievements

Being in workplaces working hand-in-hand with men is already an achievement for women.

In the Philippines, many women do excel in their chosen fields for which they received accolades. In fact, many of them are successfully running and managing multinational companies.

Roles and responsibilities

Apart from their maternal responsibilities, in today's modern society, women also have taken and assumed a wide array of roles and responsibilities ranging from working in different institutions like in the corporate world, business establishments, and in any legal income-generating endeavors.

Challenges

Sadly, despite the country's existing laws protecting women, still, physical, emotional, and psychological abuses are prevalent among Filipino women.

Sexual advances of different forms are committed in workplaces, homes, schools, public transportation, and even on public transportation.

Acts of lasciviousness are the common sexual advances committed inside public transportation perpetrated by fellow passengers and in some cases by drivers.

As we celebrate Women's Month, let's also express our genuine gratitude and appreciation to our mothers, sisters, aunts, and to all women for their valuable contribution to society and for taking care of us.

Paninilbihan (Servitude): A Traditional Filipino Courtship Custom

Another traditional courtship custom that used to be popular among Filipino men for its unique, marriage-like setup is ‘ Paninilbihan’ or servitude in the English language. Paninilbihan is just one of the many traditional Filipino courtship customs which used to be observed and practiced by Filipino suitors to help them win Filipina women’s hearts and at the same time to prove their sincerity and patience to the women they are trying to woo.  In this particular courtship tradition, the suitor stays in the house of a woman he is courting for a particular period of time. Throughout the Paninilbihan period, the man would do various farm and household chores while being observed by both the woman he is courting and her parents. The duration of Paninilbihan (Servitude) may vary depending on the suitor and the parents of the woman.
