Everyone wants to be successful in life; nobody wants to be a failure. We all aspire to succeed, be it in our professional or personal career. Unfortunately, many of us have tried but failed in some of our goals due to some factors that are beyond our control. Indeed, there is no shortcut to success. It is a long, hard process.

Like cooking a tasty, nutritious food, success is a combination of factors, synergized and intertwined to produce our desired result. Fortunately, there are values that are inherent to many of us that could help us achieve our goals in life.

Persistence

Persistence is defined as continuous effort amidst challenges along the way towards achieving our dreams in life. Persistence is one of the values that we need to succeed in our life. Without it there can be no success in life.

On our way to our goals, there will be building blocks such as losing interest in what we have started, procrastination, discouragement and other circumstances that will hinder us from achieving our goals. It is during these challenging times where the value of persistence is utilized.

Difficult life

For centuries, life has been difficult for millions of Filipinos. Every day is a struggle. Every day, Filipinos are dealing with a wide array of problems of illegal drugs, hunger, destructive calamities, high prices of basic necessities, political bickering among politicians, peace and order and yet Filipinos are still alive, happy and positive.

What could be the reasons behind this?

Firstly, Filipinos are naturally happy people. Their happy nature cannot be defeated by any challenges and misfortunes in life. Secondly, Filipinos have possessed this value of persistence enabling them to deal with life’s challenges.

Every day, millions of Filipinos have endured involuntary hunger due to lack of financial resources brought about by underemployment, high inflation, and lack of

employment opportunity in the country. Worse, Filipino children have been forced to do child labor. Some of them go to school with an empty stomach.

Patience

Another virtue of the Filipinos is being patient in dealing with life's challenges. This particular value is best exemplified in Filipino courtship. It is a fact that many Filipino men have endured long years of courtship before they finally heard the sweet word “ Yes" from their wives and girlfriends.

Had these Filipino men not had patience during the courtship period, they could not have their wives and girlfriends. In this particular situation, patience is an indispensable tool. Patience is an indispensable tool to be used in any endeavor.

Prayer

Absolutely not the least but one of the most powerful tools among the three values. Regardless of one’s religion, prayer is an important value and a potent tool in achieving our goal. It is needed for our spiritual enrichment and divine guidance as we overcome our problems along the way. Prayer helps promote our peace of mind and spiritual guidance.

Rags to riches

A number of Filipinos have reached the pinnacle of the social ladder in their respective fields through sacrifices and hardships. The likes of former Sen. Manny Pacquiao, Coco Martin, Vice Ganda, Jericho Rosales. Their success is not ascribed but was achieved through the fruits of their tenacity and sacrifices. But what do they have in common? No doubt, persistence and patience.

The aforementioned values are just some of the countless essential tools we must possess if we want to achieve in life. Although, there are other values such as hard work, determination, desire, and other values of equal importance to help us in achieving our dreams in life. Without these values, one will not be able to succeed in life.
